Homeland has been renewed for a fifth season by Showtime.

David Nevins, the network's president, said in a statement that the drama has "brilliantly reinvented itself" with its fourth season, which is currently airing on RTÉ 2.

The network has also ordered a ten-episode second season of its show The Affair.

Nevins said: "Homeland continues to capture the attention of a devoted fan base, and has provided an enviable platform for the successful launch of The Affair.

"With thought-provoking, relevant and addictive storylines, both series have been embraced, dissected and much debated week after week. We're excited to see more from these complex shows in 2015."

Homeland's fifth season will air in 2015 and will consist of 12 episodes.

Watch Homeland on RTÉ 2, Tuesdays at 9.30pm.
