Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has reportedly pulled out of filming after being struck down by a mystery illness.

The 40-year-old actor, who stars as Rovers Return landlord Steve McDonald in the UK soap, is reportedly being written out of storylines while he waits for hospital test results.

The Sun quotes a source saying: "It's a frightening time for him. He's felt under the weather for a while, but it's recently got worse."

The married father of two apparently felt unwell last month while travelling home from a family day out. Later he went to the studios to film, but became too ill to continue and went home.

Gregson's character has been seen sinking into depression following the murder of Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan). Coronation Street bosses were planning to develop the story in order to raise mental health awareness, but it now seems they will have to have a rethink.

The source continued: "The most important thing is Simon's health. He's a great guy and gives everyone a lift on set."

The source added: "It's a shock that he has had to pull out, especially when his character is so heavily involved in the storyline."
