American Gigolo is getting a TV adaption

The classic Richard Gere crime drama American Gigolo is being adapted for television.

Gere starred in the 1980 movie as a male escort who finds himself caught up in a murder investigation.

Writer and director Paul Schrader will consult on the show's pilot with the movie's producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Bruckheimer said in a statement to Deadline: "With its signature noir aesthetic, American Gigolo has remained a deeply entertaining psychological thriller and I'm thrilled to partner with [Paramount's] Brad [Grey] and Amy [Powell] on remaking it into a television series."

On its original release, American Gigolo's sexually graphic subject matter made the film fairly controversial.

The film was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for Giorgio Moroder's score and Blondie's hit song, Call Me.
