Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon have been cast in the upcoming drama Three Generations.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is described as an exploration of identity, and follows the story of Ray, a teenager in New York (Fanning) transitioning from a female to a male and her single mother Maggie (Watts), who is coming to terms with having to raise her only daughter as a son.

Sarandon will play Maggie's mother Dolly who has a hard time understanding Ray's life-altering decision.

Gaby Dellal will direct Three Generations from a script by Nikole Beckwith.

Production is scheduled to begin in New York in early November.
