Martin Scorsese will serve as executive producer on a new film about counterculture sixties band The Grateful Dead, which is being released to mark their 50th anniversary nest year.

Scorsese, who has previously directed acclaimed films about The Band, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, said in a statement: "The Grateful Dead were more than just a band. They were their own planet, populated by millions of devoted fans. I’m very happy that this picture is being made and proud to be involved.”

Surviving band members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have been interviewed for the documentary.
