EastEnders fans are set to see Martin Fowler return to Walford, with a new actor, James Bye, playing the character.

Martin was last played by James Alexandrou, who left the BBC soap in 2007.

New star Bye said: "It's an honour to be joining the cast of such a great show - especially as part of the long-standing Fowler family.

"It's a huge opportunity for me to put my own stamp onto an iconic character and I can't wait to get started!"

Bye will make his debut in Albert Square this winter.

The show's Executive Producer, Dominic Treadwell-Collins, said: "With James Alexandrou's blessing - something which was very important to us - we have recast everyman Martin Fowler after extensive auditions."

He added: "Martin is an EastEnders original - the first baby born on the Square and part of the show's roots - and, as we celebrate 30 years on Albert Square, it's important to look backwards as we move forwards."
