Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has been confirmed for Ghostbusters 3, which will feature a female-led cast.

Feig will reunite with his writer on The Heat Katie Dippold for the highly anticipated follow-up.

The director confirmed the rumours that he would be helming the sequel when he tweeted yesterday (October 8): "It's official. I'm making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call."

It is not yet known who will star in the re-launch of the franchise, however the film's original star Bill Murry name-checked Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini and Emma Stone as his top picks in September.

According to Rolling Stone, the film is expected to begin filming next year, but no official release date has been revealed.
