American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy is making a new 10-part anthology series called American Crime Story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is a companion show to American Horror Story, and each season will focus on a different real-life crime that made headlines.

The first 10-part series is called The People v. OJ Simpson and tells of the 1995 trial from the perspective of the lawyers. It is based on Jeffrey Toobin's best-selling novel The Run of His Life: The People v. OJ Simpson.

Murphy said of the new project: "This is an exciting project for me, as I've been looking for the right property which could serve as an extension of the American Horror Story brand I love so much.

"The OJ case was as tragic as it was fascinating - it seemed like everyone had a stake in the outcome. It was really the beginning of the modern tabloid age."

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said: "Time and time again, Ryan Murphy has transformed the medium of television by redefining genres and formats as he did with Nip/Tuck, Glee and the American Horror Story franchise, and we expect the same of American Crime Story

Production on American Crime Story is set to begin in early 2015.
