Game of Thrones and former Love/Hate star Aidan Gillen has been confirmed to star in the forthcoming film Maze Runner: Scorch Trials.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 46-year-old Dubliner will play villain Janson in the sequel to The Maze Runner.

Directed by Wes Ball, The Maze Runner is based on the first book in James Dashner's young adult, post-apocalyptic science fiction trilogy of the same name.

The movie - which stars former Skins actress Kaya Scoledario - topped the US box office last weekend (September 19-21), taking $32.5 million, but will not be released this side of the Atlantic until October 10.

Ball is expected to return for the follow-up, along with the film's male lead Dylan O'Brien and producers Temple Hill Entertainment and the Gotham Group.

Pre-production is said to have already begun on the project, with shooting scheduled to commence in the next six weeks.

Maze Runner: Scorch Trials is anticipated for a September 2015 release.

Aiden Gillen will play the lead role in the forthcoming RTÉ One drama Charlie, starring as former Taoiseach, Charles Haughey.
