Benedict Cumberbatch has spoken about the upcoming series of Sherlock, describing it as "phenomenal".

The hugely successful BBC show is due to return for a Christmas special in 2015, followed by a three-part series in 2016.

Cumberbatch told Empire of the new episodes: "I can't give any plot away... but their pitch for the Christmas special and the series beyond that is just phenomenal.

"We've never seen [Sherlock] being really pressed yet, so that will be interesting."

Fans will be pleased to hear that the actor also revealed that he would like to keep Sherlock going into the future.

He said: "I'd like us to finish on a high, but we'll do it until we don't want to do it anymore. As long as the ideas are still there and the audience still wants it... I'd love to do it into old age, I really would."
