HBO has confirmed that Vince Vaughn will star in True Detective's second season, alongside fellow leading actor Colin Farrell.

The Wedding Crashers star was rumoured to be in negotiations for a role in the second run of the anthology series last month.

Farrell, who already revealed that he would star in the series, is playing Ray Velcoro, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him".

Vaughn's character is Frank Semyon, "a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner".

HBO also revealed that Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) will direct the first two episodes of the series.

The show will follow three police officers and a criminal who become involved in a web of conspiracy following the murder of a corrupt California city manager.

The rest of the cast have not yet been announced, with Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch, Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss, Rachel McAdams, Jessica Biel and Rosario Dawson among the actors linked to roles in the highly-anticipated show.
