Joseph Gordon-Levitt is being lined up to play Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone's biopic about the CIA leaker.

The Don Jon star is reportedly in talks to play the role of the computer expert who leaked classified intelligence information last summer, according to Deadline.

Filmmaker Stone and producer Moritz Borman have acquired the film rights to the novel Time of the Octopus, written by Snowden's Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

The book tells the story of an American whistle-blower who seeks asylum in Russian.

They have also bought the screen rights to The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man written by Guardian journalist Luke Harding.

Filming on the Snowden biopic is expected to begin in Munich this December.
