He's not known for his fondness for velvet rope events but Cillian Murphy has told RTÉ Ten that he's looking forward to the world premiere of the new season of Peaky Blinders in Birmingham this Sunday.

Cork actor Murphy plays gang leader Thomas Shelby in the BBC drama and he will attend the premiere with the rest of the cast.

"I'm getting better at that sort of thing," he told RTÉ TEN. "I'm delighted that it's in Birmingham because it's set in that city and [writer] Steve [Knight] is from there. So, yeah, I think that there should be a good buzz and good atmosphere."

Murphy is looking forward to the return of Peaky Blinders to BBC Two this October and says that the 1920s drama is even better shape this time around.

"For me, the second season is when the show will really take flight," he says. "And I do think that the writing has reached a new level of excellence.

"This season he's really gone and pushed the characters to extremes, and I think it will be exciting for the fans."
