Oh You Pretty Things

9.00pm BBC 4

This three-part series explores the rivalry between the various British subcultures from the mid-60s to the early 90s. From the Mod movement to Roxy Music’s glamorous art rock, episode one explores how music and fashion became the most colourful and powerful expressions of identity amid the changes of post-war Britain.

The programme features footage of street fashion in the UK, with archive performances including The Small Faces, and Desmond Dekker at the 1970 Reggae Festival at Wembley. (The Small Faces' Kenny Jones reveals that they were actually paid in clothes from Carnaby Street.)

Status Quo discuss their transition from psychedelic frilly shirts to double denim, and Pauline Black talks about Selector’s proving that black and white people could be in a band together. Other contributors include designer Anthony Price, Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay, Warren Gold of Carnaby Street’s Lord John menswear boutique, and Nigel Weymouth of legendary boutique Granny Takes A Trip. Status Quo are pictured below, years after the psychedila frills and spills were binned.

Ireland’s Lost Babies

9.00pm BBC Two

The 2013 movie Philomena was based on the true story of Philomena Lee, who was forced by the Catholic Church to give up her illegitimate son for adoption. The film recreated Philomena's quest 50 years after that traumatic event to find her child, with  the assistance of journalist Martin Sixsmith.

In tonight’s film, Sixmith goes on a journey to investigate the Irish Catholic Church’s role in an adoption trade which saw thousands of ‘illegitimate’ children taken from their mothers and sent abroad.

Reporting from Ireland and America, Martin discovers evidence that prospective parents were not properly vetted, sometimes with tragic consequences. He also witnesses the struggle of mother and child in their attempts to find each other across continents. Picture below shows Judi Dench and Steve Coogan in the movie, which earned four Oscar nominations. The latter film can be seen on RTÉ One at 10.15pm on Thursday 17.
