Star Trek star Zachary Quinto and veteran Scottish actor Brian Cox have been cast in NBC's new miniseries The Slap.

The eight-episode domestic drama, based on the novel of the same name by Australian author Christos Tsiolkas, examines the repercussions for a group of friends after one person slaps another's child at a barbecue.

Quinto will play Harry, the married father of a 15-year-old son, while Cox will feature as Manolis, the good-natured patriarch of the leading family.

They join Peter Sarsgaard and Mary-Louise Parker, both of whom were previously announced as cast members of the US drama.

Brothers & Sisters creator Jon Robin Baitz is writing the script and the series will be directed by Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right).

The Slap was previously adapted as an Australian miniseries in 2011 and starred Melissa George.
