Dublin Zoo has announced the birth of a common or plains zebra foal. The as yet un-named female foal was born to first-time mum Wiesje on Tuesday, September 2. Have a look at the pictures here.
This is the first birth of a zebra at the zoo since 1991 and it is of great significance. The new arrival weighs in at 50 kilos and has already developed a strong bond with Wiesje.
“We are delighted with the birth of the zebra foal, “ says team leader Helen Clarke-Bennett. “The mother was pregnant when she arrived at Dublin Zoo so we were extremely excited about the prospect of the birth.”
The common zebra is also known as the Grant’s zebra and it is the most geographically widespread of all zebras. They range from the south of Ethiopia through east Africa to as far south as Botswana and eastern South Africa.
Dublin Zoo, a not for profit organisation, is open seven days a week from 9.30am to 6.00pm.
