Singing twins The Proclaimers have donated £10,000 (€12.5,000) to the Yes campaign in the Scottish Independence referendum.

A social media campaign has also been launched to get their pro-independence anthem, Cap In Hand, to No 1 in time for the vote on September 18.

Charlie and Craig Reid, who have enjoyed massive hits with I'm Gonna Be, 500 Miles and Letter from America, are the latest Scottish stars to call for a Yes vote for independence from the rest of the UK following support from Sean Connery, actor Brian Cox and comedian Frankie Boyle.

Cap in Hand, a track from the twins' 1988 album Sunshine on Leith, has already topped Amazon's download chart, outselling songs by Taylor Swift and Maroon 5.

The song features a line in the chorus stating: “I can’t understand why we let someone else rule our land - cap in hand.”

Among the celebrities calling for a No vote are Helena Bonham Carter, Simon Cowell, Sting, Judi Dench and Patrick Stewart.
