Former Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman says that too many actors are “precious and self-regarding.”
Speaking to the Radio Times the 64-year-old broadcaster said: “I have met many actors over the years and, while some of them are luminously entertaining, far too many are precious and self-regarding, taking the speaking of words written for them by someone else as if it were as important as being a heart surgeon.”
He also mourned the absence of decent satire on TV, asking why the likes of shows such as Spitting Image have disappeared.
Paxman admitted he thought it unlikely he would be returning to the Fringe festival next year where his one-man show did good business.
The newsman revealed he found the expectant faces in the audience terrifying. “The experience of having one’s name in lights still frightens me a bit,” he declared.
