The Brendan Gleeson-starring Calvary has opened in the US with the highest screen average for any independent film at the weekend.
The film, directed by John Michael McDonagh, took an average of $18,000 per screen and will now open in a further eight markets, with more cinemas in New York and Los Angeles also screening the Irish box office hit.
Frank Rodriguez, Senior Vice President at distributor Fox Searchlight, said: "The opening weekend figures fall right in line with our expectations.
"Based on the reactions from various screenings we have held, we are aware of the film's great playability and expect that good word of mouth will help to direct audiences to see Calvary.”
