Bord Gáis Best Newcomer of the Year Award winner Julia Kelly publishes her new novel, The Playground, in September - a family drama which sees a mother wrongly accused of causing a terrible accident.
The Dubliner's debut novel, With My Lazy Eye, won the best newcomer award in 2007 and her new book tells the story of Eve, a single mother living in a tiny flat with her beloved baby daughter who begins a campaign to make the local playground the heart of the community.
When a terrible accident is blamed on her, Eve realises that the playground is not a place to hide from adulthood. .
Kelly was born in 1969, studied English, Sociology and Journalism in Dublin, and lived for a number of years in London. She now lives in Bray, County Wicklow.
“Julia Kelly’s is surely the freshest voice in Irish fiction since the wonderful early novels of Edna O’Brien,” wrote John Banville of With My Lazy Eye.
