Robert Downey Jr. has come out in support of his son after he was arrested for cocaine possession.

Indio Downey, was taken into custody in West Hollywood after police pulled over his friend's car, in which he was travelling. 

According to US showbiz website TMZ, the officers searched the car and allegedly found cocaine, which then led to arrests. 

"Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it." Robert Downey Jr. said in a statement.

He also said, "Also there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we're all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being.

"We're grateful to the sheriff's department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story ahead of a cautionary tale.' 

Robert Downey Jr. has previously struggled with alcohol and drug problems.
