The American soul singer and songwriter Bobby Womack has died at the age of 70.
Billboard.com reports that Womack had been battling colon cancer and also had diabetes.
The son of two musicians, Cleveland-born Womack's musical career spanned more than five decades, starting in the gospel community in the 1950s before he became a key figure in soul and R&B.
Among his best-known songs are Woman's Gotta Have It, It's All Over Now and Across 110th Street.
After collaborating with Damon Albarn's Gorillaz project on the album Plastic Beach in 2010, Womack teamed up again with Albarn and released his first solo album in more than 10 years, the critically acclaimed The Bravest Man in the Universe, in 2012.
He was working on a new album at the time of his death; his last performance was at the Bonnaroo festival in the US on June 14.
