A Claude Monet painting of water lilies, sold for almost £32 million at auction in London on Monday, the second highest price ever paid for a Monet at auction.
Monday’s (June 23) auction of 46 modern and impressionist works by a list of artists which included Mondrian, Sisley, Picasso, Manet and Kandinsky brought in nearly £122m in total.
The Monet water lilies painting, entitled Nympheas, was executed in a square format in 1906.
The bidding for the picture progressed for almost 10 minutes, with buyers from Asia packing into Sotheby's auction rooms.
Towards the end of bidding, the price went up by £250,000 increments until it reached the final all-in price of £31.722m.
