Season two of HBO's True Detective will have three leads, it has been confirmed.

The first instalment of the anthology series starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two cops investigating a string of ritualistic murders in Louisiana.

In an episode of the podcast To the Best of Our Knowledge the show's creator Nic Pizzolatto has revealed that there will be 3 main characters in the new season and that it will move location to California.

He said: "Not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser-known venues of California. And we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambience of the place, much like we did in season one."

Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain was linked to a leading role in True Detective's second run, but this has been denied.

Casting for the three new leads will start within the next few weeks, Pizzolatto has confirmed.
