The band’s new album, Ghost Stories, has given Coldplay their sixth consecutive number one album in the UK, topping this week's UK chart and becoming the fastest-selling album of the year.
Coldplay's album broke the first-week sales figure acheived by the year's previous leader in sales, Paolo Nutini's Caustic Love. Ghost Stories sold 168,000 copies to the Scot’s 109,000.
Michael Jackson's posthumous compilation, Xscape, has slipped to number two in the UK charts, followed by What Have We Become, a collaboration by former Beautiful South singers Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott.
Paloma Faith's A Perfect Contradiction is at number four, just ahead of the 20th anniversary re-release of Oasis's debut, Definitely Maybe.
