HR Giger, the creator of the creature in sci-fi movie classic Alien, has died from injuries he suffered in a fall. He was 74.

The Swiss surrealist artist won an Oscar for designing the alien in Ridley Scott's 1979 horror classic and he also worked on Poltergeist II, sci-fi epic Dune and Species.

Giger also designed album covers including Brain Salad Surgery, a 1973 album by Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Debbie Harry's 1981 solo album, Koo Koo.

He died in hospital yesterday (May 12), according to Sandra Mivelaz, administrator of the HR Giger museum in Gruyeres, western Switzerland.
