Following its world premiere at this month's Tribeca Film Festival in New York, the new Irish horror The Canal has been picked up for distribution in North America.

Deadline.com says distribution company The Orchard has agreed a deal for the film and plans to release it theatrically in "20 major North American markets", online and on cable, satellite and DVD.

Written and directed by Ivan Kavanagh, The Canal stars Rupert Evans (Hellboy), Hannah Hoekstra (Hemel) and Antonia Campbell-Hughes (Albert Nobbs, Kelly + Victor).
