Lily Allen has claimed fellow popstar Lady Gaga is a martyr for art after forgoing commercial success on her latest album so that she could stay true to her vision.

The 28-year-old Air Balloon hit-maker has spoken out in support of Lady Gaga after she was criticised over her latest album ARTPOP, insisting she deserves praise for the risks she has taken.

Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine Allen said: "If she's not succeeding commercially because she's standing by what she does as art, then that's a f****** great thing.

''That's to be commended. That's what makes a martyr. There's nothing wrong with that.''

Allen has faced similar problems with her own music and she told the magazine she had to select her singles to make sure that they were acceptable for radio.

She said: ''I would love Hard Out Here to have been a single, but you can't have a song that has the word b***h in it 72 times on the radio.''
