A new X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer has been released and features glimpses of new footage from Bryan Singer's superhero epic.

The clip was broadcast during last night's season finale of zombie drama series The Walking Dead on US cable network AMC.

The superhero film, a follow-up to 2011's X-Men: First Class will unite the cast of the original trilogy - led by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen - with newer stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.

Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Ellen Page, Halle Berry and Nicholas Hoult are among the other returning cast members.

The latest Marvel blockbuster will serve as a sequel to both X-Men: The Last Stand and First Class. Days of Future Past sees the X-Men fighting for the survival of the human race across two time periods.

The original trilogy's characters join forces with their younger selves in order to change their pasts, and thereby prevent a cataclysmic future.

The film is based on Chris Claremont and John Byrne's acclaimed 1980 comic book story that deals with a dystopian future in which mutants are incarcerated in internment camps.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released on May 22.
