Pierce Brosnan has said he took inspiration from Richard Madeley for his new role as a chat show host in A Long Way Down.

Brosnan plays a disgraced host in the new comedy based on Nick Hornby’s novel. The film also stars Toni Collette, Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots and is directed by Pascal Chaumeil.

Speaking to The Huffington Post UK, Brosnan said of Madeley "I think it's his sheer ebullience and enthusiasm."

Asked about the role of a chat show host he said "You have to be almost shamanic to do it, really, and really believe in yourself. And it's a thin line between being affable and being really annoying. So it takes a brave soul, really."

The film, which tells the story of four suicidal people who meet on the top of London skyscraper, opens in Ireland this weekend.
