Guy Pearce is in talks to star as the brother of Irish-American gangster Whitey Bulger in the forthcoming crime drama Black Mass.

Johnny Depp will play Bulger, the Boston-born crime kingpin, who is now 84 and is currently serving two life prison terms plus five years after a jury found that he participated in 11 murders.

The film's storyline will focus on Bulger's life as an FBI informant and a merciless criminal. When he was tipped off that the feds were on to him, Bulger went on the run with his girlfriend for almost a decade before being caught in 2011.

Australian actor Joel Edgerton is also in talks for a role in the movie, according to Variety.

Out of the Furnace director Scott Cooper will helm the project, replacing Barry Levinson, who had previously believed to be in line to direct.
