John Travolta wants to put a lid on his unfortunate gaffe at Sunday's Oscars ceremony, when he mispronounced Idina Menzel's name.

The veteran actor took to the stage to introduce Menzel to perform the ballad Let It Go, from the animated movie Frozen, but appeared to announce her as "the wickedly talented, the one and only, Adele Dazeem".

Travolta has now released a humorous statement, saying: "I've been beating myself up all day. Then I thought, 'What would Idina Menzel say?' She'd say, 'Let it go, let it go!'

"Idina is incredibly talented," he added. "And I am so happy Frozen took home two Oscars Sunday night."

Let It Go went on to win the Best Original Song prize at the ceremony, while Frozen won the award for Best Animated Film.
