The Hobbit star Aidan Turner has landed the lead role in a remake of classic TV drama Poldark.

The 30-year-old Irish actor will take on the part of Ross Poldark in Debbie Horsfield’s adaptation of Winston Graham’s acclaimed novels set in 18th century Cornwall.

The series previously ran between 1975 and 1977 with Robin Ellis in the lead role.

Speaking about the project, Aidan told the BBC: "I'm very excited to play Ross Poldark for the BBC and it's obviously a huge challenge to honour the extraordinary character Winston Graham created and who Debbie Horsfield has brought new life to. But there's a terrific team coming together and the scripts are superb, so I can't wait to get started."

The new series of the six hour-long episodes are tipped to be aired next year.
