Julia Roberts half sister Nancy Motes has died from an apparent drug overdose, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

Motes was the 37-year-old younger half sister to both Julia, Lisa and Eric Roberts, and the daughter of their mother and her second husband, Michael Motes.

The family released the following statement yesterday evening: "It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes... confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose.

"There is no official report from the Coroner's office yet. The family is both shocked and devastated."

Oscar nominee Roberts, 46 who is married to Daniel Moder and together they are parents to twins Hazel and Phinnaeus and son Henry, missed yesterday's Oscar nominees' luncheon.

Speaking to The Mirror recently Roberts has said that she could relate to the characters in her new film August: Osage County, which sees a family brought together through crisis.

She said: "There's nothing like making a movie like this to make you go home and appreciate what you have. I love to cook and I love to have all my family around the dinner table.

"It's definitely a place for revelations and in some cases they can turn ugly, but for me it's a very happy space and a nourishing, beautiful place for a family to spend time together."
