Girls has been renewed for a fourth season, it has been announced.

The third series of the popular comedy-drama from Lena Dunham will premiere this Sunday (January 12) in the US, and will air on Monday, January 20 on Sky Atlantic.

HBO has now confirmed at its Television Critics Association winter press tour panel that the show will resume filming this spring, with the fourth season due on screens in 2015.

The network tweeted about the show's renewal: "We are happy to announce that @girlsHBO is picked up for another season," along with a photo of Dunham with her co-star Allison Williams.

Dunham's co-stars Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, Jemima Kirke, Adam Driver and Alex Karpovsky will all return for the new run.

Girls is up for the Comedy or Musical Series award at this weekend's Golden Globes, while Dunham also is nominated in the Comedy or Musical Series - Actress category.
