The journalist Simon Hoggart, who covered Northern Ireland at the height of The Troubles and who was much-loved for his acerbic parliamentary sketches from The House of Commons, has died after a three-year battle with cancer.

Hoggart joined The Guardian newspaper in 1968 and reported on the North and also served as Washington correspondent for The Obsever. His cutting sketches of British politicians in the Commons were acclaimed for their satire and well-judged contempt.

He chaired BBC Radio Four's The News Quiz for ten years and also wrote for satirical magazine Punch and The Spectator.
