Comedian Rory Bremner leads tributes to his "father figure" John Fortune, who died yesterday at the age of 74.

A well-known political satirist, Fortune found fame on Bremner, Bird and Fortune and paying tribute to him Bremner said: "He was, first and foremost a lovely man.

"He was very well read, a very literary man. He was very much a father figure and a mentor to me."

Fortune's agent released a statement yesterday saying: “It is with great sadness that I write of the death of John Fortune this morning.

“He died peacefully with his wife, Emma and dog Grizelle, at his bedside.

“A renowned satirist, early work included contributions to Peter Cook’s Establishment club and more latterly his work with long term collaborators, John Bird and Rory Bremner.

“He is survived by his adored wife, Emma and three children.”
