Two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson has blamed her Saving Mr Banks perm for not having…sex for six months!"

She told Parade magazine about her hair-do for the role as Mary Poppins creator PL Travers: "It was a nightmare! People would bleat in the streets as I went by.

"I didn't have sex for six months!"

Aside from that the actress, who has been married to husband Greg Wise for 10 years, spoke of her delight at working with Tom Hanks.

She said: "For a long time we'd looked for something to do together. [After reading the script] I rang Tom and said, 'This is great, because it's not a romance.

“It's about a battle that they both win and lose. It's perfect.'"

Speaking about her role at a BAFTA event last month, she said that many people "were all surprised that Disney had let us make it in the first place."

In an interview with Collider she said that it was great to play a character who wasn’t  "so bloody polite, all the time…"

She added: "I think, quite a lot of the time, we act in conflict with what we really feel.

"In films, we often get to play people who are emotionally, or at least morally, consistent, in some way, and [Travers] wasn't consistent, in any way. You would not know what you would get, from one moment to the next."
