Bette Midler has been attached to play Mae West in a new biopic from HBO.

The project is the brainchild of William Friedkin (The Exorcist, Killer Joe) who will direct and executive produce alongside Midler.

Also executive producing is Jerry Weintraub, who was behind HBO Films’ Emmy award-winning Behind The Candelabra, which starred Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

The new Mae West biopic is based on the Hollywood star's autobiography Goodness Had Nothing to Do With It, Deadline reports.

West was known for her successful stage and screen career which spanned seven decades.

The project is currently in development but has not yet been officially greenlit.
