Veteran actor Alan Alda is joining NBC thriller The Blacklist.

The former M*A*S*H star will be portraying an old foe of Raymond 'Red' Reddington (James Spader), a master criminal who works with the FBI to catch other villains.

According to Access Hollywood his character Crowley will warn Reddington that he must keep some damaging evidence under wraps or face dire consequences.

Alda's notable television credits include The West Wing and The Big C (currently on RTÉ Two on Thursdays), in addition to playing Hawkeye Pierce in the landmark comedy M*A*S*H from 1972 to 1983.

NBC gave The Blacklist a full season order in October and the show airs on Fridays on UK satellite channel Sky Living.
