One Direction have been rated as the UK's most influential Twitter users with their five individual accounts taking the top five spots.

Liam Payne ranked at number one followed by band-mates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.

Friends and family of the group also ranked highly in the list with Louis' girlfriend Eleanor Calder ranking more influential than Labour leader Ed Miliband.

PeerIndex, a London-based company providing social media analytics, analysed over 10 billion tweets to compile the list which, in a nice nod to Twitter's maximum character count, consists of 140 people with the aim of "providing a snapshot of national affinities".

The scores were based on how much traffic the individual generates on the website so while Harry Styles and Niall Horan have more followers than Liam, more people have responded to his tweets or re-tweeted them.

The PeerIndex top 10 Twitter users are:

1. Liam Payne @real_liam_payne (13,909, 863 followers)
