UK satellite channel Universal Channel has secured rights to host the British premiere of US legal drama Rake, starring Greg Kinnear.

Following the current success of US imports Bates Motel and Sleepy Hollow, Rake is the latest high-profile acquisition for Universal Channel and marks Kinnear's broadcast TV series debut as brilliant but self-destructive criminal defence lawyer, Keegan Joye.

Rake sees Joye spar with everyone around him - including his ex-wife, judges, the assistant district attorney, his bookie, and even the IRS - as he relies on his wit and charm to defend the indefensible, both in and out of the courtroom.

Universal Channel director James Newton described the show as “one of the most talked-about series of this year’s LA Screenings.  It immediately became a prime target for us, and we’re delighted to have secured it this early, long before its US launch.”

Rake also stars Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings), John Oritz (Fast & Furious), and Necar Zadegan (24) and is an adaptation of the Australian series of the same name.
