Emile Hirsch is in the running to play the late actor John Belushi in an upcoming biopic.

Steve Conrad, who wrote the script and will now direct the project, has already met with Hirsch to discuss playing Belushi, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

According to sources, Conrad has also met with Adam Devine (Workaholics), while Joaquin Phoenix's name has also surfaced in connection with the role.

The film will chronicle Belushi's career on Saturday Night Live and his ultimately losing battle with drug abuse.

Nelson Franklin (New Girl, The Office) is being eyed to play Belushi's friend and collaborator Dan Ackroyd.

Ackroyd is on board as an executive producer while Belushi’s widow, Judy Belushi Pisano, is one of the producers.

The filmmakers are hoping to shoot in New York in spring 2014.
