Filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro has said that a sequel to sci-fi adventure, Pacific Rim, is in the works.

The 49-year-old Mexican film director has revealed he's started work on a follow up with screenwriter Travis Beacham, although he is unsure if studio bosses at Warner Bros. will give the project the green light.

Speaking to, Del Toro said: "We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that's definitely above my pay rate."

Pacific Rim, which was released in July of this year, starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi as they tried to save mankind from an invasion of giant monsters.
