DC Comics and Warner Bros have released a special animated short film to mark Superman's 75th anniversary.

It was in 1938 that Action Comics was first launched, with the origin story of Superman, and a comic book legend was born. Originally costing 10 US cents, a copy would now sell for around $2 million.

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder and DC animator Bruce Timm oversaw the two-minute tribute, which charts Superman's journey from the pages of Action Comics to TV and Hollywood.

The video features various landmark Man of Steel moments, including the George Reeves TV series, Christopher Reeve's movies and the character's comic book death at the hands of Doomsday.

Man of Steel, this year's Henry Cavill-starring cinematic reboot, will be released on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download on November 12 in the US and December 2 on this side of the Atlantic.

Superman will return to the big screen in 2015's Superman v Batman.
