House of Cards star Kate Mara has been cast in a thriller based on a true story.

The actress will star alongside English actor David Oyelowo (Jack Reacher, The Butler).

The story is based on the true events that occurred in Atlanta in 2005, when Brian Nichols, who will be played by Oyelowo in the film, broke out of a courthouse jail and shot dead the judge assigned to his case, a court reporter, sheriff's deputy and FBI agent.

Nichols then took Ashley Smith (Mara), a single mother struggling with meth addiction, hostage in her own apartment while on the run from the police.

However, Smith managed to reason with her captor by using Rick Warren's book The Purpose Driven Life, with surprising results.

Jerry Jameson (Raise the Titanic) will direct from a script from Brian Bird and Reinhard Denke, who have adapted Smith’s best-selling book An Unlikely Angel.

The movie is scheduled to begin filming later this month.
