Music mogul Simon Cowell has defended The X Factor's new chair twist insisting that viewers really "love" the drama of it all.

The 53-year-old star stated that the new format, which sees the panel choosing to keep singers but then being able to swap them for later auditionees, is "some of the most exciting TV" he's ever made.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cowell said: "It's very different than anything we've done. This is some of the most exciting TV we've made on one of these shows. It is dramatic, it is controversial, but we all love that.

"People went nuts, half loving it and half hating it."

Simon recently revealed that he is developing a new show, saying: "I won't say what it is because I'm very protective about it, but we're launching the show in France and Italy before the UK and America, so that we can road test it in a different way."

The X Factor continues on Saturday (October 5) at 8pm on TV3 and ITV.
