Katy Perry has said she had suicidal thoughts after she split from Russell Brand in 2011 after 14 months of marriage.

The 28-year-old, who releases her fourth album, Prism, on October 22nd, says that she questioned if she wanted to "continue living" during the split, which she has called a "dark time."

Speaking to Billboard magazine, Perry said: "I asked myself, ‘Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?’ All the songs are real-life moments. I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the truth about stuff just listen to the songs.”

Perry, who has been dating singer John Mayer for the past year, says that her heartache inspired her new song, By The Grace Of God. "That song is evidence of how tough it was at a certain point."
