Cate Blanchett is set to make her directorial debut, it has been confirmed.

The Blue Jasmine star is stepping behind the camera to helm The Dinner, a thriller based on Herman Koch's best-selling European novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The dark novel focuses on two families who are struggling to make a tough decision regarding their teenage sons, with the whole story unfolding over one dinner.

The script for the feature film will be adapted by Oren Moverman (The Messenger, I'm Not There), with the storyline focusing on how far parents will go to protect their children.

Executive producers on the project are Eva Maria Daniels and Olga Segura.

It is not known whether Blanchett will also star in the film.
