Harry Potter author JK Rowling has signed up to pen a film based on elements of Potter's wizarding world.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will be based on the book of the same name that Rowling released in 2001.

The book follows the adventures of fictitious author Newt Scamander and has featured in the Harry Potter films and books.

This will be Rowling's first screenplay to write and it is planned that it will be the first in a new series of films.

Harry Potter and friends will not be appearing in the film however with Rowling saying, "Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world."

"The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry's gets underway."

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is expected to also have video game tie-ins with Warner Bros and links to Rowling's Pottermore website.
